Darwin and God. Faith, Evolution, Ethics (17.12.2009)
On the 17th of December 2009 in the San Pasquale conference room, about fifty people attended the presentation of the book Darwin e Dio. Fede, evoluzione, etica [Darwin and God. Faith, evolution, ethics] (Morcelliana, Brescia 2009), by Simone Morandini, a Professor at Institute of Ecumenical Studies 'Saint Bernadine', a Professor Pier Francesco Ghetti, lecturer of Environmental Science at Ca' Foscari University (Venice) and Professor Placido Sgroi from Institute of Ecumenical Studies, discussed the book with the author.
Professor Ghetti underlined the intellectual honesty of the book which includes and faithfully presents the content of contemporary biological science as a presupposition to a serious theological dialogue.
Professor Sgroi in fact concentrated his observations on some theological issues after carefully analyzing the conceptual structure of the volume, focusing on the most stimulating passages in the development of the pertinent topic.
Professor Morandini stressed the complexity of the subject: if Darwin and Biology he set in motion pose challenges to theology and ethics, they cannot be addressed through easy shortcuts, on the contrary, they require analytical reflection and succinct consideration. Only then can theological reasoning enable us today to think of God in Jesus Christ truly as the standard of contemporary rationality, proclaiming love and creative power in ways meaningful to those living in this time of science.
