San Francesco della Vigna Library

and its ancient collections

(2008-04-18)

On the 18th of March 2008, San Francesco della Vigna Library, in conjunction with the Veneto Region and the Veneto Province of St. Anthony of the Order of the Friar Minors, organized a seminar titled San Francesco della Vigna Library and its ancient Collections.

During the meeting, the work of cataloguing the ancient collections held in our Library was presented: particular attention was given to the collection of the Ss. Redentore (Verona), recently catalogued with the contributions by the Veneto Region, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Goods, the Italian Episcopal Conference and the Veneto Province of the Order of the Friars Minor.

In the first speech, after retracing the main steps of the history of the Library, Dr. Elena Boaga outlined the current status of the Library. Fr. Rino Sgarbossa outined some meaningful developmental stages of the Library focusing on the reasons which defined them. In this connection, the support performed by the Veneto Province of the Friars Minor and the Institute of Ecumenical Studies was highlighted. Dr. Federica Benedetti briefly outlined a general presentation of the ancient collections recently acquired and presently held in the Library and then expanded on the history, the quantity and the volumes of particular value belonging to the Ss. Redentore in Verona.

In turn, Dr. Lorena Dal Poz, from the Book Heritage Superintendent Office of the Veneto Region, called the attention on a 1484 edition, held at San Francesco della Vigna Library, containing the Constitutions by Clement V,  with the commentary of by Johannes Andreae and printed in Venice by Battista Torti. This is a particularly interesting text because the illuminated incipit letter depicting Clement V and two kneeling characters could possibly be attributed to Plinio di Picco.

Finally, Dr. Massimo Canella, Manager of the Department of Book, Archival and Museum Heritage Services of the Veneto Region, spoke on the policies on Book Heritage Conservation implemented by the Veneto Region.

At the end of the varied presentations, the numerous and qualified public had the opportunity to visit the Library and the exhibition of precious volumes made available for the occasion.
